Police Arrest Woman for Exchanging Her Two-Month-Old Baby for Rice, and Others in Imo

A 20-year-old woman, Chioma Fidelis, has self-confessed to exchanging her two-month-old son, Favour Fidelis, for a half bag of rice, six chairs, cement and N200,000 cash.
The suspect and her accomplice were paraded by the Imo State Police on Friday, July 14.
The woman who disclosed that she got pregnant out of wedlock and was unable to cater for the newborn, chose to exchange the boy for the above-mentioned items.
Chioma, who is a native of Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State, said she accepted the offer because the baby was suffering from kwashiorkor, and also because she had no one to Carter for her and the child.
Her female accomplice, Chidimma Unakalamba, confessed to selling the boy to a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Anyanwu, who was in need of a male child.
According to her, the baby was sold for N600,000, but the couple insisted that they paid N700,000 for the child.
Unakalamba then admitted that she deducted N137,000 she spent on the child’s medical bills and that she gave the mother N200,000 and pocketed the remaining.
However, the baby was recovered.
