Morgan Freeman accused of sexual misconduct by EIGHT women
The Shawshank Redemption star has apologised, saying he didn't intend to make anyone feel 'uncomfortable or disrespected'
Hollywood legend Morgan Freeman has been accused of sexual misconduct by eight women.
The star of films including Shawshank Redemption, Seven and Bruce Almighty is the latest Hollywood star alleged to have committed abuse with allegations going back a decade.
Today he issued a statement apologising to "anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected" by his behaviour as that was "never my intent".
Sixteen people - eight witnesses and eight who claim to be victims - have come forward to claim the actor engaged in “inappropriate behaviour” and “harassment” as they worked alongside him.
One assistant, who worked on the heist comedy Going In Style in 2015, claimed the Oscar winner “kept trying to lift up my skirt and asking if I was wearing underwear.”
He allegedly tried to repeatedly over several months until co-star Alan Arkin said something.
“Alan [Arkin] made a comment telling him to stop. Morgan got freaked out and didn’t know what to say,” the woman told CNN, who carried out the investigation.
Another film worker said Freeman, 80, would often comment on the bodies of women on set and that they would be careful not to wear tight fitted clothing around him in case he would say something inappropriate.
A senior member of the production staff of the movie Now You See Me in 2012 said Freeman “did comment on our bodies.
"We knew that if he was coming by not to wear any top that would show our breasts, not to wear anything that would show our bottoms, meaning not wearing clothes that [were] fitted.”
Reporters who interviewed Freeman at press events also experienced similar behaviour.
At least one incident reported was allegedly witnessed by Lori McCreary, Freeman’s co-founder at his Revelations Entertainment company.
McCreary’s spokesperson refused to comment on the claims.
Several of the women said they never spoke publicly about Freeman’s alleged behaviour before because they were afraid of losing their jobs.
During the investigation, CNN discovered the father-of-four’s alleged conduct was something of an open secret in Hollywood, with multiple sources naming him.
At a spokesperson’s request, CNN emailed “a detailed list” of the accusations against Freeman but received no response.
The actor is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, with a movie career spanning almost five decades. His starring roles in such movies as “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Shawshank Redemption” in the late 1980s and early 1990s made him a household name. He has also played God several times including in the film Bruce Almighty and its sequel, Evan Almighty,
He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for 2004’s “Million Dollar Baby,” and has earned four other Oscar nominations.
His voiceover work has also netted him millions, including his narration for the Academy Award-winning documentaries “The Long Way Home” and “March of the Penguins.
Last night a spokesman on behalf of the actor was unavailable for comment.
Over the past year, more than 200 powerful people — celebrities, politicians, CEOs, and others — have been the subject of sexual harassment or assault allegations after movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was first outed.
Other stars that have been accused of sexual misconduct include Steven Seagal, Michael Douglas, Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Spacey. All have denied any wrongdoing.
